MIR 103. CNI 17/20. Ravegnani Morosini 1. Very rare.
Nice BB.
This was the first Florentine coin to feature the effigy of a duke. This 40 soldi testane, worth three barrels and featuring Alessandro de' Medici's hairstyle, was nicknamed "riccio" by the Florentines. The die engraving is attributed to Benvenuto Cellini, and it was minted on April 25, 1534.
The reverse features Saints Cosmas and Damian, considered the patrons of the art of physicians and apothecaries, as well as protective figures of the Medici family. (cit. Ravegnani-Morosini vol. II, p. 323).
