Specialist Notes
The Myth of Diana and Endymion is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses and tells the story of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt and the Moon, and the young mortal shepherd Endymion.Diana, in love with Endymion, asked her father Zeus to give him eternal youth. Zeus fulfilled his daughter's requests, but in addition to not aging him, he plunged Endymion into eternal sleep. All that remained for Diana was to go and admire her beloved sleeping unconscious. With this myth it was explained in antiquity why, on certain nights, the sky was devoid of the moon: the Goddess in love descended from the sky in her chariot to visit Endymion.
