Specialist Notes
As part of the group of Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Armenian Apostolic Church has a history stretching back a thousand years (it broke away from the Roman Church in 554, adopting its own independent position in the debate over the attributes of Christ’s human and divine nature); it has four institutional locations in Armenia, Lebanon, Jerusalem and Constantinople, as well as a significant presence in Iran. These portraits, produced in the format and using the technique of cartes de visite, depict the vestments and robes of the Patriarch (known as cathólicos in Armenian) and of the various ministers of the church.
