Specialist Notes

The history of Italian ships, in the context we are discussing, is particularly important if only because it is through their long voyages and various ports of call that knowledge is disseminated and relationships are built. Although built for combat, they also performed many other functions. This was the case with the Royal Battleship ‘Calabria’, launched in La Spezia in 1894 and equipped with cannons, machine guns and mechanisms for launching torpedoes and depth charges. As this rich album testifies, the ‘oceanic campaign’ was fundamental: under the command of Admiral Carlo Trucco, the ship literally circumnavigated the globe, gathering a wide variety of evidence—primarily photographic—thanks to numerous land explorations.
