Specialist Notes
Extremely rare original edition of this elegant album, with all the plates featuring fine contemporary tempera coloring.
The work was created to celebrate—and immortalize—the entry into Milan of Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria , who had traveled to the city to be crowned King of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia on September 6, 1838. The lithographic plates depict the emperor's entrance into the atrium of Porta Sant'Ambrogio and the various monuments—two triumphal arches and a granite obelisk—designed by Chiappa for the occasion. In the introduction that opens the volume, the architect informs us that these were "drawings for works to be executed on such auspicious and joyful occasion" and that the plates "depict the said works, one of which (the obelisk) has already been executed in granite, the others in a temporary and decorative manner."
