Specialist Notes
Ford's racing program in the 1960s included recruiting Lotus boss Colin Chapman to give the new Cortina a sporting makeover. His task was to develop a version to compete in Group 2: Lotus would build the 1,000 cars needed for homologation. Launched in 1963, the Lotus Cortina featured the 1.6-litre double overhead camshaft engine based on the Ford Elan. Our example, chassis number D636316990D and left-hand drive, was prepared for racing and holds the ACI-CSAI certificate. It belonged to Gianni Chiesa, president of the Scuderia del Grifone, and was sold after a recent restoration by University Motors, and with a set of magnesium wheels. The car was prepared with aluminum bonnets, plexiglass rear window and rear windows, reinforced Duomi, new exhaust, adjustable dampers and double electric petrol pump.
