Specialist Notes

The first edition of this dictionary became a point of reference in the eighteenth-century musical scene and helped consolidate Rousseau's reputation in the arts as well. It was the most comprehensive and systematic treatise available on the subject; with its 906 entries, it remains an essential source for understanding the state of theoretical knowledge of the time.
