Information
Milan, Ricordi, 1904. 8°, 200 x 135 mm. Editorial paperback in red and black with refined oriental drawings, 76 pp. OPERA Libretto of the World Premiere, February 1904, Teatro alla Scala.
Specialist Notes
Extremely rare libretto of the opera's first performance in February 1904.
The world premiere was one of the most memorable flops in the history of opera: Puccini, the librettists, and Ricordi immediately withdrew the opera. Thus began a long and complex story of subsequent changes, cuts, some additions, and reconsiderations of the changes. However, the opera was revived a few months after its premiere in Brescia (May 28, 1904) and from then on began its triumphal march throughout the world. (Puccini Museum, online)
