Specialist Notes
A Handbook for Travelers in Japan was first published in 1891 and went through several reprints. Basil Hall Chamberlain was a professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University and a pioneering scholar of the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages. This volume, one of Chamberlain's many works on Japan, was part of the "Murray's Handbooks for Travellers" series, a series of travel guides published in London by John Murray starting in 1836.
