Specialist Notes

The decoration of this lot is inspired by the ancient Roman wall paintings found during excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum starting in the first half of the 18th century.
Regarding the cup, for a similar ornithological decoration, see Angela Caròla-Perrotti (ed.), Le porcellane dei Borbone di Napoli. Capodimonte e Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea 1743-1806 , exhibition catalogue (National Archaeological Museum, Naples, 19 December 1986-30 April 1987), Naples 1986, pp. 456-458.
