Specialist Notes
This subject was painted several times by Raffaele Giovine and his disciples, taking inspiration from the gouaches of the painter Saverio della Gatta, dated between 1815 and 1820. In our case, the scene is particularly rich in that the central subject of the cart with the pilgrims, which usually appears alone, is here surrounded by a large group of peasant families, while in the background two other carts are visible, further conveying the sense of the procession.
