SPECTACULAR EXAMPLE IN GOLD-DUSTED MOROCCAN, ENTIRELY REGLEE, WITH WIDE MARGINS, COVERED WITH ONE OF THE VERY FAN-SHAPED BINDINGS WITH EMPTY COMPARTMENTS.
"These bindings correspond either to a particular development of the interlacing bindings of the reign of Henry II, or to a branch detached from the primitive fan bindings, made of this magnificent gold-dusted leather of group III of Mabien bindings: it is possible that the gilder chose this light decoration to avoid killing the tone of the leather, which a more heavy gilding would not have failed to do." ( Les Reliures à la Fanfare . G. D. Hobson 1931). This binding belongs to the small group made around 1565-1570 characterized by the elegance and sobriety of the fan decoration applied on a very fine leather entirely dusted with gold, which gives it this particularly warm color. Its structure connects it to one of the Parisian ateliers that worked at the time for Thomas Mahieu. ITS FORMAT, ITS STATE OF PRESERVATION, ITS ELEGANCE AND ITS WARM COLOUR GIVE IT A PARTICULAR SPLENDOUR. Bibliography: Les Reliures à la Fanfare. by GD Hobson. London 1931.
