Information

First edition in only 25 copies (it was later reprinted in larger runs), 1942, publishing house Collezione di Lettere d'oggi. Editorial paperback. First volume of the Collection of Short Novels edited by “Lettere d'oggi”, a magazine directed by Gian Battista Vicari and created in 1941 as a transformation of «Ansedonia» (1938-40). Printed at the Istituto Grafico Tiberino (Carrara Brothers Printing House in Bergamo). Pavese's work chosen to inaugurate the «Collection of Short Novels» had appeared in installments in the magazine, in a non-definitive version. On the back of the title page is a drawing expressly composed by Antonio Vangelli for «La spiaggia» -- a drawing from which the detail illustrating the cover and the title page is taken. An almost experimental work by the author; he himself said: «La spiaggia, on the other hand, my non-brutal, non-proletarian and non-American little novel - which fortunately few have read - is not a splinter of the monolith. It represents a distraction of mine, even a human one, and in short, if it were worth it, I would be ashamed of it. It is what is called a frank search for style". Copy embellished with the ownership signature of the eminent literary critic Giuseppe Susini.
