Information

Paris, H. Piazza, 1928. In 4°, 230 x 300 mm. First edition illustrated by Barbier, with 20 color plates outside the text in pochoir. Number 830/1025 on vellum. Bound in red morocco with decorated cardboard bands, original paperbacks preserved. Verlaine's poems in Fêtes galantes (first published in 1869) were inspired by Watteau's pastorals, the sumptuous fantasies of Fragonard and Boucher, and drew their characters from the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte. Barbier's sensibility made him the perfect artist to reinterpret Verlaine in the 1920s.
