Edition of 250 copies in total, this is no. 17 of 30 headstocks on Japon ancien with the addition of a suite of 12 plates printed sur Chine. Illustrated by Matisse with a linogravure cover, 147 original scribbled engravings, including 18 in b/w outside the text, 39 headpieces, including 26 in black and 13 in red, 6 culs-de-lampe and 84 initials in red.
A perfect example of one of the first artist's books illustrated by Matisse , splendidly accomplished in the full-page illustrations and particularly elegant in the friezes inserted in the text.
