Information

Autographed letter signed addressed to Abbot Antonio Dragoni. Modena, 7 April 1831. Bifolio, mm. 245x185, written on the first two pages, the last one contains the addressee's address and the sealing wax. Stamp of the Sommi-Picenardi collection on the first page. Traces of folding, tear on the inside margin of the second page without loss of text. On light blue paper.
The letter concerns one of the first insurrectional movements of the Risorgimento , which profoundly affected the life of Giuseppe Baraldi, a priest and historian from Modena and one of the major exponents of Italian Catholic conservatism of the time, who was vice-director of the Estense Library in Modena and a professor at the university of the same city, as well as director of the periodical “Memorie di religione, morale e letteratura” from 1822. Appointed press censor in 1828, Baraldi sided with the government of Duke Francesco IV when the revolutionary movements led by Ciro Menotti broke out in February 1831. Attacked in the square by the crowd shouting “death to Baraldi”, he was forced to flee to Florence on the night between 23 and 24 February. In this letter, addressed to the Cremonese prelate and historian of the church of his city Antonio Dragoni, he recalls precisely those moments: the attack of the crowd, the escape to Florence and the subsequent return to Modena, on March 19, where, he writes, there are still many "bad heads", the dukes are thinking of abandoning her, but she has resumed working on the "Memoirs". A few weeks after sending this letter, on May 26, the patriot Ciro Menotti was executed after a summary trial. Less than a year later Baraldi will also die.
Also in the lot is another signed autograph letter addressed to Count Mario Valdrighi. Modena, 18 March 1821. Single sheet of mm. 243x185, written only on the recto, the verso contains the address and the sealing wax stamp. Traces of folding, small lack in the left margin without loss. On light blue paper. Short letter, written in a hurry, which refers to the “baptismal certificate sought by V. Schiassi”, to a letter sent by Baraldi to Massa and to a package sent to Bologna.
