Information
Umberto I of Savoy (Turin 1844 - Monza 1900), son of Vittorio Emanuele II and Maria Adelaide. He ascended to the throne in 1878. In foreign policy he looked favorably upon the Triple Alliance (1882) and supported Crispi's policy of colonial expansion. On the domestic front he supported the authoritarian turn of the end of the century, and as a consequence of this attitude he was killed in Monza by the anarchist G. Bresci.
