Venice, Iacopo del Burgofranco from Pavese, at the request of the noble lord Lucantonio Giunta from Florence, 1529. On 2nd. Frontispiece printed in red and black within an architectural frame depicting the Muses at the base and five great Latin and five Italian poets on either side (the same frame, however, with only Latin poets in the side columns, frames the first large woodcut that inaugurates the Inferno). At the bottom, in the centre, a red Florentine lily. On the back of the frontispiece is the famous and beautiful portrait of Dante, two other large woodcuts are placed at the beginning of Purgatory and Paradise while each individual canto bears a smaller woodcut illustration at the beginning. Ink marks, burnishing and some pages are slightly trimmed. Modern red half-leather binding with wooden boards.
Specialist Notes
A valuable edition, universally known for the presence of the large portrait of Dante, the first to ever appear in an edition of the Divine Comedy. The work of an anonymous Venetian master, it was created on the much smaller portrait present in the edition of the Amoroso convito of 1521. This illustration is responsible for the idea of the poet's physiognomy among contemporaries and posterity. The text is based on that of the Aldine edition of 1502, but is here accompanied by the classic commentary by Landino. The iconographic apparatus, inspired by Botticelli, is instead taken from the Venetian Capcasa edition of 1491 and to create it several matrices of the printer were also recovered.
