Alamanni (1495-1556) has been considered for some centuries one of the greatest Italian poets, as demonstrated by the number of editions, which is close to that of the greatest exponents of Italian poetry. However, the histories of twentieth and twenty-first century literature do not assign him the role that Italian publishers between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries showed they recognized, with the number of reprints. The author wrote this poem in octaves in imitation of the Iliad and deals with an imaginary war that in 500 AD Celts, Christians and pagan Germans fought around Avaricum.
