Specialist Notes
This edition was printed in the elegant italic script of Bernardino Stagnino, founder of the Giolito family, who worked in Venice for over fifty years and was the first Piedmontese printer to have printed Dante. He reprinted it in 1520 and 1536. The decorative apparatus, in the first edition, consists of a woodcut frontispiece and 98 vignettes in the text, as well as a portrait of Bernardino of Siena on the title and the printer's mark on the last sheet. The woodcuts, inspired by the 1491 edition, are sometimes signed with the monograms C, CI, CC or PF. The title is printed in red and black; like the incipit (f. 2), it is decorated with a frame of four woodcuts.
