Venice, for Marchio Sessa & Pietro di Ravani, 14 August 1516. In 2nd. Typographic brand of Sessa, cat with mouse in its mouth in a circle surmounted by a crown. on the sides the initials M.S., frontispiece in red and black, small mark (globe and cross) at the end of the “Repertoire” on paper bb7v, woodcut inscription from the tomb of Pliny's parents on bb8r, thirty-seven woodcuts in the text, woodcut initials, marginal stains and reddening, especially on the first leaves, some with slightly worn margins, binding with modern wooden boards covered with leather, perhaps recovery of the ancient binding.
Specialist Notes
Fifth edition of Landino's popular Italian translation, first published in Venice in 1476. The woodcuts used are, with one exception (the illustration at the beginning of book IX), those used by Agostino de' Zanni for Sessa in his 1513 edition of the Latin text.
