"The Boccaccio fiction of the four noble women and five young men gathered in besieged Siena to celebrate the last three days of the 1554 carnival is mannered, while the description of the games and love affairs responds to the same aristocratic and municipal pride that had inspired to his brother Girolamo, with more moving participation, the elegiac re-enactment of the "beautiful ancient customs" of Siena in the Dialogue of games. The short stories are also supported by a studied artifice of content and form theme, entirely amorous, obeys the canon of the balanced alternation of serious and humorous, established in the Renaissance precepts of the narrative genre, while the prose, supported by a staid and oratorical disposition of the members of the period, reveals the effort of the humanistic exercise, incapable but to achieve appreciable results of high style."
