Parma, in the house of Seth Viotto, 1558. In 4th small. Nineteenth-century half-leather binding, title stamped in gold on the spine. Woodcut brand printed on the title page depicting a flintlock inside a border with masks. A card detached and reassembled. Sporadic redness and damp stains affecting the front edge of some papers, defects on the hinges.

First edition of this famous work which triggered one of the harshest literary controversies of the Italian sixteenth century, that between Caro and Ludovico Castelvetro. The work appeared anonymously under the name of the Accademici dei Banchi.
