Paris, chez l'auteur, 1787 (1785 on the frontispiece). In 4th 5 vols (1-5). Frontispiece with period coloring repeated in each volume, with 360 tipped-in plates engraved in chalcography by François-Anne David and, for the most part, colored in bistre, light burnishing, slight foxing, contemporary parchment binding, titles within tassels on the spine with 5 ribs, slight defects.
Specialist Notes
Rare edition. The plates mainly reproduce antiquities from William Hamilton's personal cabinet. He was a diplomat and patron in Italy for over thirty-five years and responsible for the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The first edition of the work, in 4 folio volumes, was published in Naples in 1766-1767. Blackmer, n°847 - Cohen, 474 - Brunet, II, 536.
