Specialist Notes
Gregorio Leti (Milan, May 29, 1630 - Amsterdam, 1701) Italian man of letters. He spent the first years of his youth in Cosenza studying with the Jesuits. His father died in 1639, an ecclesiastical uncle hosted him in Rome in 1644. In 1646 he moved first to Venice where he made a lasting friendship with Brusoni and then to Turin and it was in these years that his career as a writer probably began. He then left Italy to move to Geneva where, in 1660, he married the daughter of a Genevan doctor (Antoine Guérin) and adhered to Calvinism. In Geneva, Leti; he obtained a first notable success with the gallant novel L'amore by Carlo Gonzaga, duke of Mantua and the countess Margarita della Rovere, published in the name of Giulio Capocoda (Ragosa 1666), and even more so with the Life of woman Olimpia Maldachini (Cosmopoli [ but Geneva] 1666); in the name of Abbot Gualdi it was the Life of Sixtus V (Lausanne [but Geneva] 1669), published with the indication of the name in anagram "Geltio Rogeri, ad instance di Gregorio Leti", to guarantee the notoriety of L. as a writer . The work had a notable measurable success, also on the basis of the translations, extensions and republications that lasted well into the nineteenth century. He contributed, in addition to the interest still alive for the pontiff and the narration of a picaresque novel, not without Boccaccio references, which well met the taste of his contemporaries. Pierre Bayle liked the work, thrilled Madame de Sévigné and earned the praise of Emanuele Tesauro. It was followed by the Life of the Catholic king Philip II, monarch of Spain (Coligny [but Geneva] 1679), published in the name of L. with the title of "Resurrected", which he himself had used after surviving a serious illness. This voluminous biography marked the end of the Genevan period, favoring the Protestant condemnation, after the Catholic one of 1671, which would definitively remove Leti from the city. The most serious and decisive accusation was that of the pastor of the French and Italian Church Benedetto Calandrini, who, in agreement with the ministers Turrettini and Burlamacchi, denounced the work as abusive towards the reformed religion and the city of Geneva. The indictment quickly spread to other works published previously and subjected to criminal proceedings, despite having reaffirmed his devotion to the Republic to the city council, he was forced, in August 1679, to abandon the city.
