Naples Subtle 1602. In small folio. Author's coat of arms engraved in wood on the title page, numerous woodcuts with diagrams and codes, wood-engraved drop caps, headpieces and friezes, small tear without loss on the lower margin of the title page and small restoration on the upper margin, light browning, more intense on a few leaves , woodworm work on the outer margin of the last issues, coeval parchment binding, title and author in gold on the spine, some handwritten annotations, minor defects.
Specialist Notes
First folio edition (the third after Naples 1563 and London 1591) of the famous work on cryptography by Della Porta. It describes one of the first examples of a polyalphabetic substitution cipher.
