Information

[Lyon, Barthélemy Trot, 2 September 1511]. In 8vo. Title printed in red and black with Trot's Florentine lily in red, widespread browning and marginal wormholes on the first and last quires, curious modern binding in full brown leather with blind embossing on the covers and spine, gilded and embossed edges. § Also in the lot are Cicero's Orations in the Florentine edition of the Giunta dated February 1521, missing the title page and the last leaf, bound in decorated cardboard.

Specialist Notes

This is the second edition of Xenophon printed in Lyon by Trot; an undated edition had previously appeared around 1504. The Xenophon texts included are: Cyropaedia, Devenatione, De republica et de legibus Lacedaemoniorum, Agesilaus, Apologia pro Socrate, and De tyrannide . Although it has the appearance of an Aldine forgery (due to its format and typeface), Aldus printed Xenophon only in the original Greek folio, and the text of this edition is actually taken from the 1502 Bolognese edition of Benedictus Hectoris, complete with Philippus Beroald's preface to Gregorius Fliscus.
