Specialist Notes
Saint Vigilius was the third bishop of Trento in the 4th-5th centuries; he was sent by Saint Ambrose to Christianize the region and is the patron saint of Trento. His story, linked to legends about the conversion of pagans in Trentino, is known for the episode of his martyrdom in Val Rendena, where he tore down a pagan statue and was killed by peasants. His remains are preserved in the crypt of Trento's ancient cathedral.
