Specialist Notes

The first edition of Lodovico Domenichi's vernacular translation, the only one ever published, appeared in 1557 at the request of the publisher Plinio Pietrasanta. The first Latin edition of Pietro Marcello's text, De vitis principum et gestis Venetorum liber, dated 1502 and included the biographies of 73 doges. Later, Silvestro Girelli added the lives of four more doges, also translated here by Domenichi, while Giorgio Benzoni completed the work with three additional biographies, written directly in Italian, up to Doge Francesco Venier, who died in 1556.
