Specialist Notes

  • A rare 17th-century edition of this pocket-sized Renaissance encyclopedia, compiled by Virgilio Polidoro (Urbino, 1470–1555) during his tenure as secretary to the Duke of Urbino. The work constitutes a scholarly humanist repertoire on the origins of human inventions and institutions, gathering curiosities and knowledge in a wide range of fields: from the invention of wine (chapter III, book III) to the invention of labyrinths (chapter X, book III), from alchemy to astronomy, and more.
