Specialist Notes
Second, extremely rare edition of this study of Arabic grammar in Spanish by Francisco Cañes (1730–1795), an Arabist and Franciscan missionary in the Near East. Cañes conceived this work with the intention of promoting the conversion of Arabic-speaking communities to Christianity. At the same time, however, his work reveals a genuine linguistic interest: it includes philological reflections on the influence of Arabic on Spanish and the value of Arabic as a tool for exploring the languages of the Bible.
