Specialist Notes

First edition. This splendid work, part of the collection Description des Arts et Métiers, became an essential reference for anyone interested in embroidery. The author came from a dynasty of master embroiderers connected to the French court: his father worked for Louis XIV, while he and his brothers continued the tradition under Louis XV. In the volume, Saint-Aubin illustrates numerous techniques—from relief to various types of threads, stitches, and decorations—and reaffirms the central role of design, which determines the balance, proportion, and harmony of the finished work. Even today, this work stands as an unsurpassed testament to the excellence and refinement achieved by embroidery during the most sumptuous period of European fashion.
