Information
Parma, in the house of Seth Viotto, 1558. Small 4vo. 19th-century half-leather binding, title stamped in gilt on the spine. Woodcut trademark on the title page depicting a steel within a border with masks. One leaf detached and remounted. Sporadic reddening and a damp stain affecting the front margin of some leaves, defects on the hinges.

Specialist Notes
First edition of this celebrated work, which sparked one of the most bitter literary controversies of sixteenth-century Italy, between Caro and Ludovico Castelvetro. The work appeared anonymously under the name of the Accademici dei Banchi.
