Frontispiece in red and black, historiated headboards and initials, widespread browning due to oxidation of the paper, some flowering, contemporary rigid parchment binding with titles on red patches on the spine, corner defects, slight stains. Bibliographic notes on the counterplate and on the guard, on the first guard sheet of the first volume a note of possession and printed bifolium on the history of the work.

Important critical edition, edited by Pierre Coste (1668-1747), finally accompanied by a series of essays by various authors on the life and works of Montaigne (1533-1592).
