Specialist Notes

A very rare and fascinating collection of full-page prints of Botticelli's most famous drawings, created between 1490 and 1496 for Dante Alighieri's poem. These limited-edition prints were reproduced from "The Divine Comedy illustrated by Botticelli," an early illuminated manuscript commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici. The manuscript originally contained around 100 miniatures, but eight folios have been lost: the eight drawings illustrating Cantos II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, XI, and XIV of the Inferno. Cantos XXXI and XXXIII of the Paradiso were never illustrated. With an introduction in German by Emil Schaeffer (1874–1944), an Austrian art historian, publisher, and playwright.
