Florence, Fratelli Alinari Editori, 1902-1903. In 2°. 375 x 270 mm. 3 parts in one volume, 381 black and white illustrations in the text, several of which are collotype printed on outside-the-text cards in monochrome tones of various colors, antique-style binding on leather-covered wooden boards with blind embossing and metal clasps, minor defects.
Specialist Notes
An undeniable monument to the taste of an era, this original Alinari edition is the result of a famous competition involving Italian artists of various generations and renown. The competition was announced by Vittorio Alinari in May 1900, inviting Italian artists to re-illustrate the Divine Comedy. First prize was awarded to Alberto Zardo, second to Armando Spadini, and third place jointly awarded to Duilio Cambellotti and Ernesto Bellandi. Other artists who participated included: Plinio Nomellini, Giovanni Fattori, Adofo De Carolis, A. Martini, G. Chini, A. Spadini, G. Costetti, G. Kienerk, L. Tommasi, P. Senno, and G. A. Sartorio. The resulting drawings were reproduced using collotype for publication in the volume and are a testament to the Italian art scene of the time and the popularity of Dante's poem from the 19th century onward.
