[Tivoli], Francesco Felice Mancini, 1647. In 16°. Woodcut vignette on the title page, woodcut decorations, heavily trimmed copy, with some losses and restorations, water stain on the upper margin, some loose leaves, half leather and marbled paper binding on the back, detached from the body of the book, minor wear. Ownership stamp on the title page.

Specialist Notes

A very rare 1647 edition of this curious collection of 17th-century riddles. The expression "indovinala grillo!" is a Tuscan expression, now obsolete, used to indicate something uncertain or impossible to predict. According to popular tradition, the saying derives from an episode related to the court of Cosimo II de' Medici: a young prince challenged the jester Grillo to guess what he was holding in his hand. Another interpretation links the expression to an ancient game based on the movements of a cricket to make predictions.
