Specialist Notes
A rare first edition of this treatise by Giacomo Pergamini (1531-1615). A clergyman, humanist, and lexicographer, he is famous for his Memoriale della lingua italiana (Venice, 1602), considered the first modern European dictionary with true lexical definitions and conceived for practical and educational purposes. A forerunner of Italian lexicography, he devoted his life to the study of the vernacular, anticipating solutions that would be adopted by the later Vocabolario della Crusca.
