Specialist Notes

"How can we define 'The Untamed'?" Adventure novel? Symbolic poem? Fantasy novel? Fairy tale? Philosophical-social vision? None of these terms can characterize it. It is a free-word book. A synthetic, raw, naked work. Simultaneous, polychrome, polynoise-driven. Vast, violent, dynamic. (pE)

"Gli Indomitable" represents the supreme pinnacle of Marinetti's "traditional" prose: as a consummate allegorist, he displays in this work the virtuosity of a mature style, not without reason having passed through the most varied experiences, a style with multiple registers, at times direct, immediate, at times literary and precious; at times tinged with brutal fragments, at times suffused with musical delicacies. (...) The prose of "Gli Indomitable" stands comparison with the best artistic prose of the time. On a volcanic island, under the scorching tropical sun, a hundred chained men, the Indomitable, naked but "bristling with spikes like porcupines," and girt with iron thigh-guards, head-guards, and collars, lie in a pit guarded by muzzled black jailers. Ferocity, blood, and violence are the attributes of these beast-men who are fed by their black jailers with bloody pieces of buffalo and sheep, torn to pieces on the spot, which the Untamed seize in mid-flight with the tip of their head-pieces. (...) As the sun sets, the bestial fury of the Untamed calms down: they are freed by the blacks, who, in turn, have their muzzles removed by the Paper People, lords of the island. (...) The Untamed are led, as they do every evening, into the "fascinating and maternal shadow of the Oasis". (...) Finally, they reach the Lake of Poetry and Sentiment, where the Untamed and their jailers bathe, cleansing themselves of the remnants of their past ferocity. (...) Continuing their journey, the Untamed reach the city of the Paper People. The novel changes register and takes on a futuristic tone. (...) The city is in turmoil: the river dwellers are in a turmoil of revolt against the paper dwellers, their masters. Mirmofim, one of the Indomitables, places himself at the head of the River Dwellers: but the revolutionary river overwhelms the Indomitables who, to save themselves, are forced to flee through the Oasis and return to the burning depths of their grave where they will lie chained once again" ( Filippo Tommaso Marinetti , «Futurist Theory and Invention. Edited by Luciano De Maria», Milan, Mondadori, 1983: pp. LXXXIII - LXXXVI).
