Specialist Notes
Copy no. 316 of this elegant illustrated edition, published posthumously and also known as The Spleen of Paris. This collection of poetic prose represents Baudelaire's attempt to transcend the singularity of Les Fleurs du mal, combining, as he himself wrote in a letter to his mother, "the terrible with the grotesque, tenderness with hatred": the modern city emerges in its most restless and crepuscular aspects, observed through the gaze of Baudelaire's flâneur, a wandering and disenchanted figure capable of grasping the flipside of the positivist faith now in crisis.
