The VII Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo (January 26 – February 5, 1956) were a historic event for Italian sport: it was the first Olympic Games in which the Alpine and Nordic skiing events were broadcast live on television. The event established Cortina as the world capital of winter sports.
