Specialist Notes

This important clock, studied by Angela Caròla-Perrotti in 2019, is attributed to Francesco Celebrano, artistic director of the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea of Naples from 1771 to 1780, and was probably made on commission from the Court for the Marquis of Sambuca. As the first Secretary of State from 1776, the Marquis played a leading role in the development of the royal factory, encouraging, among other things, the arrival of Filippo Tagliolini in Naples. He was also among the main promoters of the establishment of the Farnese or Bourbon Museum and the transfer of the Farnese collections to Naples. His role as a patron was also celebrated through a half-length portrait in biscuit, sculpted by Tagliolini in 1781.
