Specialist Notes
This decoration is related to the series of sixteen plaques depicting episodes from Ovid's Metamorphoses designed in bas-relief by the sculptor Guglielmo Della Porta (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum, invv. 7768, 7769), active in Rome from 1537. The Ginori Museum collection contains the lead models deriving from the Della Porta series (invv. 6453, 6466), created in 1746 by the sculptor and medallist Antonio Francesco Selvi and used to decorate porcelain tableware from the Ginori factory (for further information see: https://museoginori.org/collezioni/caffettiera-con-il-supplizio-di-marsia-e-il-giudizio-di-paride).
It can be assumed that Florentine sculptors such as Selvi or Weber, who occasionally worked for the factory, had also taken their models from engravings from an edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses published in Amsterdam in 1732, a copy of which was preserved in the factory's library (for further information: L. Ginori Lisci, La porcellana di Doccia , Milan, 1963, pp.54-57, Le porcellane a basso rilievo ).
A handleless cup with a polychrome historiated bas-relief is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. 64.101.340); a cup, c. 1750, at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan; two tureens with tray at the Capodimonte Museum (for one of these see: L. Ginori Lisci, La porcellana di Doccia , Milan, 1963, PLATE XXX).
For comparison: L. Ginori Lisci, La porcellana di Doccia , Milan, 1963, PLATE XIII, plaque with "historiated bas-reliefs" signed by Carlo Anreiter, c. 1745, depicting Jupiter among the clouds slaying the giants.
