Specialist Notes
Francesco Fanelli (Florence 1577-Paris ? c. 1663) was active in Genoa and then mainly in England. He worked until 1642 at the court of Charles I, receiving a pension in 1635 as “sculptor of the King.” Most of his activity at court was as a sculptor of valuable collectible bronzes and small sculptures, portraitist and decorator of gardens with fountains and nymphaea. The subject of St. George fighting the dragon is recurrent in his production. The many variations on the theme are all of similar size and composition (see the gilded bronze group preserved in Ferrara, Palazzo Schifanoia, and the bronze group in Bath, Holburne of Menstrie Museum, inv. c 900)
