First French edition of Carl Friedrich Gauss's seminal treatise, born from research initiated following Piazza's discovery of Ceres in 1801. The work systematically addresses the problem of determining the orbits of celestial bodies from incomplete observations, providing innovative mathematical tools for the study of planetary and asteroid motions. In this text, Gauss formalizes, for the first time in a rigorous manner, the method of least squares and introduces Gauss's gravitational constant, laying the foundations of modern mathematical astronomy and the analysis of observational errors.
