Specialist Notes

A Neapolitan physician and philosopher, Giambattista Dalla Porta (1540-1615) was a friend of Galileo. He traveled extensively throughout Italy and Europe, often facing hardship and hardship, especially due to limited financial resources. His goal was to broaden his cultural horizons by frequenting the most important libraries, meeting the most eminent scholars of the time, and researching and purchasing rare and valuable books. He mentions his travels in various works, but particularly in his Villae , where he describes, among other things, the places he visited, such as Calabria, Puglia, Lombardy, Venice, France, and Spain. In 1592 it was published in Frankfurt, divided into twelve books where all the knowledge gained from readings, travels and personal practice in the agricultural field was brought together. Also valuable are the studies on the different species of plants, herbs and fruit encountered and on the systems for cultivating them. Two small agricultural treatises were also included in the Villae , the Pomarium and the Ulivetum , published in Naples in 1583 and 1584, which form the fifth and sixth books of this encyclopedia respectively. (see DBI,37, p. 177).
