Specialist Notes
The Music School of Naples and its Conservatories (1881–1883) is a seminal work by Francesco Florimo, published in four volumes by Vincenzo Morano. The text traces the musical history of Naples from the 17th century onward, examining the evolution of conservatories and the role of the Royal Conservatory of Music of San Pietro a Majella. It includes biographies of masters and a list of works. Volume I: Analyzes the origins of music in Italy and the Neapolitan school. Volumes II-IV: Present a historical overview of the conservatories of Naples (Poveri di Gesù Cristo, Santa Maria di Loreto, Sant'Onofrio, Pietà dei Turchini) and the biographies of the masters who graduated from these institutions, as well as a catalogue of the works performed. Vincenzo Florimo was a librarian and composer; he wrote the work at a time when the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, born from the merger of previous institutions, was the reference point, heir to 18th-century traditions. The work is rightly considered a key historical source for the study of the Neapolitan school of music and music education in Southern Italy between the 17th and 19th centuries.
