Specialist Notes
I work: "I intend in this brief writing to support the reasons of my Sovereign... I will depend on the Pontiff when he will explain to me the sacred books, the Dogmas, the Morals, the Mysteries and those obscure truths that must be adored with trembling: in all the rest I will respect him as a Sovereign Prince in relation to his Vassals, but never superior to my Master, whom only I and my Nationals must venerate, because God has given him to us, because the Kingdom belongs to him by legitimate succession, and because finally the people are happy under his government and rightly call him a virtuous Father, a clement Sovereign, a crowned Fellow Citizen." (p. 5). The work constitutes a veritable repertoire of abuses by the Church against sovereigns, and in particular analyses excommunications and interdicts, both papal and episcopal, as for example: "...the bishop of Catania excommunicated those gentlemen, Baron Figherazzi, two officials of the monarchy's tribunal, and placed his diocese under interdict. The bishop of Agrigento was then more witty than the others, since he excommunicated the Viceroy and the monarchy's tribunal. This is how the terrible weapons of the Church are blunted." (p. 71) (On the author, see Melzi, II 29). Very rare, only two copies in Italian public libraries.
