"In these same years he devoted himself to the drafting of his first systematic work, Memorie storici, profane e religiosa su la città di Matera , printed in Naples in 1818. Here Volpe discussed the history of his hometown from its origins to the mid-18th century, dividing it into "profane" and "religious" subjects. Although he relied primarily on previous studies, Volpe's merit was to bring a historiographical approach based on the consultation of primary sources in an attempt to provide a perspective as well-documented as possible, while combining erudition and ideology.
