Specialist Notes

A rare seventeenth-century edition of Virgil's Aeneid, embellished with twelve elegant woodcuts at the beginning of each canto. The text features Annibal Caro's celebrated translation, produced between 1563 and 1566 and published posthumously in 1581. Among the many Italian versions of Virgil, Caro's is still considered the most illustrious: subsequent translations may be credited with greater fidelity to the Latin text, more rigorous philological adherence, and a deeper understanding of Virgil's poetry, but none will match the grace, fluidity, and charm of the "beautiful infidel," rich in those stylistic flourishes rarely found in more severe or neglected works.
